SAE International Launches Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Certification

Technician Certification is Seen as Critical for Maintenance, Repair, and Operation of EV Charging Stations

SAE International, the world's leading authority in mobility standards development, has produced a certification program to establish and verify skills and knowledge of technicians who maintain, repair, and operate Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations. The SAE Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Technician Certification will be granted to technicians who have successfully completed a comprehensive training program and passed a rigorous exam administered by SAE ITC Probitas.

SAE worked with leading experts from EV charging supply equipment companies and manufacturers to develop a set of standards and requirements for persons holding a certification in the field of maintenance, operation, and repair of EV charging infrastructure. It ensures that technicians have a thorough understanding of the electrical, mechanical, and communication systems used in EV charging stations.

"We're excited to release this certification as it provides new GreenTech opportunities in well-paying careers especially for under-represented communities who otherwise would not have access," said Elizabeth Melville, Director of Learning at SAE International. "The certification will help charging station companies and repair providers verify that their employees have the skills and knowledge required to maintain, repair, and operate EV charging stations, and ultimately provide a better experience for EV drivers."

The certification establishes a Body of Knowledge categorized into seven domains of theoretical and practical components, including tasks such as identifying and diagnosing issues, and repairing or replacing faulty components. The EVSE Technician Certification will expand the workforce that ensures a reliable charging experience for EV drivers and help advance the adoption of electric vehicles.
