SewingDX's fixture-free 3D sewing system automates seat cover production

SewingDX is a spin-off from the Centre for Transformative Garment Production (TransGP), a research centre established through a collaboration between the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Tohoku University (TU), with support from the InnoHK initiative of the Hong Kong SAR Government. Leveraging the combined strengths of HKU and TU, SewingDX focuses on cutting-edge three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) sewing technologies. Its patented innovations—ranging from AI-guided stitching and edge tracking to automated tension control—enable the automation of complex sewing tasks traditionally performed by skilled workers.

SewingDX’s fixture-free 3D sewing system reduces operation time by 50-75%, providing affordable solutions to address labour shortages and an aging workforce. Together with PALGRIP-a Passive Actuator-Less (PAL) fabric gripper, it leverages AI-powered robotics to realise fully automated sewing applicable to automotive seat cover, garments, and more.
